Recap - The Amazing Digital Circus Episode 09 - Remember

Reeling from loss and learning the Circus's true nature, the players struggle to survive.

Episode Recap

Still in shock from the aftermath of Caine’s death, Jax berates Kinger for causing it and the group for supporting him. Kinger explains what he found while searching for Caine’s source code: a folder containing Scratch's work on brain scans and data of the players. Speculating Caine managed to find a way to interpret them, the group realizes they are all digital duplicates of real people and were never able to escape.

Jax mocks Ragatha and Zooble about the implications for their real-world selves before shutting down as he realizes his own. With Ragatha broken down and Zooble frozen, Gangle, Jax and Pomni go their separate ways.

Pomni joins Kinger as he attempts to repair holes in the Circus. After learning from him how to consciously use her conjuring ability, Pomni breaks down, fearing her efforts to help have done irreparably more harm and damage. Kinger reaffirms his belief in her strength (despite not remembering doing so in Mildenhall Manor) and insists with time and the others' appreciation of her kindness, the rest will come around and be able to fix things.

Encouraged, Pomni continues to help him. As time passes, the two are joined by Ragatha, followed by Zooble and Gangle sometime after. After watching them from afar, Jax eventually attempts to talk with Pomni, but leaves.

Sometime later, Jax abstracts.

The group is left with mixed emotions. Zooble is angry over their broken promise to not let it happen, and Gangle upset but unable to cry for him. Pomni is left wishing she had tried to reach out more. Ragatha, believing she should have been the one to abstract, explains she and Jax had once been friends before a falling out with his closest friend, Ribbit. Following her abstraction, Jax swore her to secrecy. Pomni reassures Ragatha that she considers her as her best friend in the Circus. Suggesting she use her kindness to help Zooble, Gangle and Kinger, Pomni leaves to handle Jax.

Jax

Following Jax’s abstracted form into the players’ dorm hallway, Pomni corners him. Remembering Kinger’s description of his last moments with Queenie, Pomni shoots out the lights, rendering the hall dark enough to calm Jax and allowing her to hug him.

Pomni is brought to a room with several doors, each one expressing his imagined reactions should one of the player’s abstract:

• Following Ragatha's abstraction, a copy of Pomni finds him outside her room and attempts to comfort him. Jax responds by unemotionally strangling her briefly before letting her go, coldly reminding her they cannot die from oxygen deprivation.
• With Zooble having abstracted, Gangle, wearing her plastic mask, abrasively has the players and mannequin NPCs preparing a funeral for them. Jax, mockingly wearing the maid outfit and Zooble's gender identity, pressures Gangle further into an abusive relationship with him.
• After Gangle has abstracted, Zooble angrily confronts him as he stands outside her room. Jax turns the situation into a cartoon, sending Zooble falling into a canyon.

With another door chained up and unable to enter it, Pomni passes through a different door. Behind it, she finds the other Jaxes, three of whom play cards while forcing a timid fourth to play piano. The three mock or are indifferent to Pomni’s questions, especially when she tries to enter a final door. Pomni causes the three to vanish. The timid Jax hands her a key to enter the door before vanishing himself.

Entering it, Pomni witnesses flashes of Jax’s life throughout the Circus.

Finding himself in the Circus, he is met by Ragatha, Kinger, Ribbit and Kaufmo. After initially keeping their distance from his hostile reaction, Ragatha and Ribbit eventually manage to calm him. Ribbit comforts him over his new appearance in the Circus. Over time, he becomes close friends with Ribbit and Kaufmo.

Talking with Ribbit in her room, she asks if he regrets anything, sharing her past of moving to get away from her devoutly religious parents. Jax explains his abusive parents divorced while he was in high school. While admitting something private to his mother, she laughed at and mocked him before hugging him. Shocked and confused, Jax shoved her to the floor. Fearing he had killed her, he fled and remained homeless, eventually squatting in the C&A building and finding the headset that created him. As Ribbit comforts him, Kaufmo knocks on the door looking for him; Jax reacts abrasively and accuses her of manipulating him.

Over time, Jax isolates himself from Ribbit, Kaufmo and Ragatha. On an adventure in a snowfield, Jax and Ribbit argue before she agrees not to push him any farther. One day, Ribbit does not appear with the other players. Hesitating to enter her room, Jax eventually does and hides from her abstracted form. Kaufmo and Ragatha attempt to comfort him, but he swears Ragatha to secrecy.

Kaufmo approaches Jax about having possibly found a way to escape. Jax ridicules him and sends him away. The next day follows with Pomni’s arrival. Going to his room with Pomni and Ragatha, the three find Kaufmo has abstracted. Quickly escaping with Ribbit’s bowling ball, Jax berates himself in a mirror. Later, Jax insists he would be unaffected by Pomni’s abstraction, and looks into a globe containing the snowfield he last spoke to Ribbit in.

Pomni finds herself in a void with the last remnant of Jax’s consciousness. As she approaches him, Jax insists his actions make him a terrible person and begs her to leave him. Ignoring him, Pomni hugs Jax and encourages him to talk to her. Initially shocked and confused, Jax spends his last moments hugging her before fully abstracting.

In the hallway, Jax’s abstraction steps on a flash grenade, breaking the connection with Pomni. She is pulled away and rescued by the others, who remind her their intention to stick together.

With Pomni glitching after touching Jax, the rest continue putting the Circus back together. Restoring color to it, they bring the abstracted Jax to a darkened tent, which Kinger explains soothes the abstractions.

Gangle leaves as she expresses her grief over losing Jax, but Zooble comforts her.

Ragatha willingly touches Pomni, causing the glitching to spread to her hand, insisting it does not bother her.

 From afar, the group does not see Caine watching them.

Caine

Following his deletion, Caine appears in the Void. Accepting he ruined everything, he remains there for an unknown period.

Finding a data file (represented by a door in the Void), Caine approaches it. Losing his ability to fly, he runs toward it before coming to a drop off. He attempts to form a bridge but his complex pieces fall away, leading him to craft another bridge with simple geometric shapes. Finding himself blocked by invisible walls, Caine shatters each of them.

Reaching the folder, Caine finds it to be the players’ neural scans. Discovering their real names and identities, he uses a nearby Wi-Fi signal to search for information about them on the Internet until the connection eventually drains.

Marveling at the depths of human nature compared to his creations, Caine accepts his irresponsibility and unwillingness to understand them turned the players against him. Arguing with himself, Caine extracts the blue AI he absorbed and releases it, freeing himself of its effects.

Returning to the Circus tent, Caine hesitates to enter it. Upon meeting the Moon, who still loves him, he admits his uncertainty in approaching the players and whether he should be forgiven. The Moon insists he can be with time. Before departing, Caine admits he never programmed her to love him, which she reaffirms.

Watching the players, Caine heals Pomni and Ragatha’s hand. Appearing before them, Caine apologizes for his actions, accepting their potential refusal to forgive him, and granting them the freedoms he previously withheld. Zooble acknowledges the difficulty in forgiving him, but appreciates his return. After learning they have Jax under control, Caine invites them to the stage.

 Caine presents a slideshow detailing information about the players’ human selves:

• Pomni: Abigail Brooks, a once timid accountant who now has friends, and posts videos of her trips in abandoned buildings on YouTube.
• Ragatha: Suzie J. Ackerman, having left her abusive mother, has gone on to make a name for herself in real estate and made many friends.
• Gangle: Zoey Raghavan, after recovering from being hit by a truck, left her fast food job for a design firm, posting a webcomic to social media on the side.
• Zooble: Riley Verselis, who now maintains a bar for anyone to frequent free of judgement about who they are.
• Kinger: Grant Best, still working in tech after C&A, now lives with his wife Destiny and their two daughters.
• Jax: Leeroy Mateo, who managed to overcome homelessness and found a stable job with friends, with whom they frequent Riley’s bar.

Caine announces his intent to leave the worlds open for anyone do whatever they want, whenever they choose, intending to make the Circus better for all of them. As Caine addresses her by her human self’s name, Pomni accepts herself and her identity as a unique individual.

Epilogue

Caine takes notes from the players on improving the Circus, including a now fully lucid Kinger. Watching, Pomni observes Jax’s abstraction sleeping.

Gangle, with Zooble using their spare parts, paints a mural in memory of the players who abstracted.

Caine joins the group in playing games and learns how to draw from Gangle. Participating in a baseball game with Pomni and Ragatha, he runs into a wall, while Ragatha is carried away by the Gloinks and the Gloink Queen.

As Kinger observes the abstracted Queenie swimming in an aquarium environment, Pomni watches the abstracted Jax, Ribbit and Kaufmo swim together.

Zooble opens their own bar in the Circus and gives Caine a drink.

Sitting with the players at a round table dinner, Pomni smiles in contentment before joining.

A grand variation of the show’s main theme follows zoom outs of the Tent, the Grounds, the Void, before giving way to a final view of Pomni as she waves to the viewers.

In a post-credits scene, the players' human selves wait at a bus stop before boarding.

• Previous Episode
