Recap - The Amazing Digital Circus Episode 04 - Fast Food Masquerade

The gang takes part in a fast food-themed adventure, which challenges them in ways none of them could have expected, and brings one to their breaking point.

Ragatha’s attempt to show Gangle how to play baseball goes wrong when Jax accidentally breaks her comedy mask. Zooble offers her a harder and sturdier plastic mask.

Caine enlists the players with a new adventure, the Curse of the Psychopath Butcher, before Pomni objects to being subjected to another horror-themed adventure. Learning the details about the Mildenhall Manor adventure intended for them specifically, Zooble suggests Caine read through their suggestion box. After passing on suggestions in which Zooble and Jax would antagonize each other, he finds one suggesting work at a fast food restaurant.

Learning about Gangle’s history working for a fast food place, Caine selects it as the day’s adventure - An Honest Hard Day’s Work at Spudsy’s - and names Gangle manager for the day. Fed up with Zooble refusing to participate again, Caine agrees to let Kinger sit the adventure out before dropping Zooble down a hole.

With the group arriving at Spudsy’s, Gangle makes preparations for the day to begin. Jax attempts to flout her authority by throwing Ragatha into a deep fryer, prompting a proudly manic Gangle to call Caine and ask him to punish unruly players. With Ragatha placed on assembly, Jax at takeout, Zooble cooking and Pomni taking orders, the day begins.

Pomni’s first customer is Orbsman, an NPC the others recognize and Pomni struggles to understand. Gangle quietly scolds Jax for declaring his hatred of Orbsman, suggesting he wait until after hours to do so. Pomni’s second customer rudely demands a Stupid Burger, admitting they are addicted to the Stupid Sauce. Assembling it, Ragatha accidentally squirts some of the Stupid Sauce into her eye, causing her to become intoxicated. Discussing the situation, Jax believes Caine will not punish them, while Zooble warns against pushing him.

Pomni’s next customers are Gummigoo, Max and Chad. Struggling to control herself after meeting him again, Pomni quickly learns that Gummigoo has no memory of their time together. Learning from Ragatha about Pomni’s absence from register, Gangle berates her, her over-the-top behavior alarming Pomni and the customers.

Returning to the register for lunch, Pomni’s next customer eats a bowl of cereal rather than order. The remaining NPCs in line are devoured by the Gloink Queen, who demands an order of 300 burgers for the Gloinks. Ragatha is enamored to find the Gloinks have individual names. Accepting that the Gummigoo she knew no longer exists, Pomni briefly says goodbye as he leaves.

Gangle tells Jax to clean out the restrooms. Refusing, Jax admits he prefers Gangle’s sadder,  submissive state. Gangle responds by sending him to a back room and subjects him to a retraining video.

With Zooble confused and frustrated by Ragatha’s drunken behavior slowing progress, Gangle attempts to motivate her. Still under the effects the sauce, Ragatha bluntly tells Gangle her new mask makes her annoying. As Jax returns and demands Gangle fix their clock, she responds by distressingly ranting about her fears of never leaving – before realizing the clock is in fact broken.

Ragatha drunkenly admits to Jax she hates him but doesn’t want him to hate her. Unfazed, Jax tries to casually talk with Pomni; already disturbed after learning the specifics of Gloink reproduction, she remains suspicious around him.

Later, Gangle steps outside and removes her new mask to scream privately, before finding Pomni already outside. Seeing her distress, Pomni suggests she talk to Ragatha. Gangle admits she questions Ragatha’s sincerity, before defying Pomni’s attempts to talk with her and returning to work.

 

 

Jax leaves at 9PM, insulting Gangle as he does before quietly and exhaustively reaching his car. Zooble agrees to stay late to help Ragatha before eventually parting with her.

Increasingly withdrawn and depressed by the day's events, Gangle nearly succumbs to abstracting before Pomni offers to stay late in her place, allowing her to leave early.

Outside the restaurant, Gangle throws away the plastic mask. Embracing her freedom without it, Gangle trips into a nearby road and is hit by a truck.

Transported to Caine’s office, he gives her a performance review and offers to raise her score in exchange for blaming the day's shortcomings on the others. Gangle refuses to do so and insists she cracked under pressure. Caine downgrades her performance to a B+ (which all the players have received sans Kinger, who has an A+ and is seen riding a bull). As she leaves, Caine dubs himself a great boss, but glitches before he can finish talking.

With the players back in the Circus, Zooble finds Gangle hiding away from the others. Guilt-ridden for her actions while wearing the plastic mask, Gangle feels unwelcome. Zooble concedes the mask failed to help her, but suggests the rest will forgive her, and invites Gangle to share her artwork with them.
