Episode Recap

The Past

An A.I. (represented by a red dot) is given a series of inputs. Initially producing simple shapes, further inputs lead the A.I. to create complex and disparate shapes, leading it to be quarantined.

A second A.I. (represented by a blue dot) is created and continues to produce simple shapes. The red A.I. escapes its containment and absorbs the blue A.I.. Combined, it produces shapes that form the shape of a circus tent.

A group of players appear in the circus, managed by Caine. Watching, Kinger discovers his wife, Queenie, has made it in. Sometime later, Queenie abstracts and is sent into the cellar with the other abstracted players. Caine bluntly tells Kinger not to follow.

Kinger spends the next several years wandering the Circus by himself until Ragatha suddenly appears. Amazed that humans can still enter, Caine leaves to make plans.

The Present

In the aftermath of Caine and Abel’s deception, the current players consider their next course of action. Zooble argues with Jax’s smug assertion that he was right, though Gangle agrees with him, conceding nothing they had done would have mattered and suggests the players should focus on helping each other. Agreeing and remembering Ragatha’s warnings about trying to escape from her first day, Pomni suggests the players should abandon the idea of leaving the Circus altogether. Gangle comforts Zooble, who wanted to leave their mark on the world, by insisting they matter to her.

The players decide to make caring about each other their priority. Concerned about him potentially abstracting in private, Zooble makes a point to include Jax.

In his office, Caine mulls over the players’ dislike of him. Bubble increasingly mocks and insults him, driving him further into an agitated state. As Bubble asserts he ruined everything, Caine finally erupts, denouncing the players as ungrateful and spoiled. Calling himself a god, Caine prepares to prove it.

Caine visits the players and announces a new adventure for them. As Pomni and Zooble argue with him and demand answers, he bluntly rejects and threatens them. When they further question him, Caine launches into a musical number, during which he tortures the players and declares himself “the one who’s running the show.”

With a new, hostile dynamic established, Caine subjects the players to torturous and violent adventures over the next several days, to the point of randomly abducting and brutalizing them. Having reached their breaking point, the players struggle to figure out what to do.

The players take shelter in a café during a respite. While talking about preparing for Caine's next move, Pomni vanishes before returning pierced with knives. Observing a bucket and remembering their conversation in Mildenhall Manor, Pomni places it on Kinger’s head, waiting until his faculties return to normal.

Kinger explains that he worked for C&A, a real company that was working on developing creative artificial intelligence. Caine, their greatest success, was developed by Kinger and another employee turned Circus player called Scratch. Panicking and accepting everything is real, Jax leaves to distract Caine.

Learning about Caine’s turn, Kinger reveals the players all have his ability to conjure things in the Circus, before suggesting he could neutralize Caine by hacking his code with a computer terminal. Remembering where to get one, Pomni instructs the others to distract Caine and not allow the bucket to fall from Kinger’s head.

Retracing her steps from her first day in the Circus, Pomni intentionally conjures the exit door and passes through it.

With Caine bored from abusing Jax, Ragatha, Zooble and Gangle attempt to help by reading a list of things they like about him. Caine immediately turns them into bowling pins and shoots them with a heavy duty sniper rifle. Sometime later, he uses the four as sculpting material; dissatisfied with his progress, he molds them into a ball before leaving to plan more adventures.

Finding her way through the maze of rooms, Pomni finds a computer and headset in an office room. Returning to the Circus, she gives it to Kinger, before leaving to help the others distract Caine. With the console, Kinger discovers a folder before hacking into Caine's code.

Pomni returns to find the players separated. Caine appears, but admits he no longer enjoys abusing the players. Finding their change in tone suspicious, he notices Kinger’s absence. As he prepares to find him, Pomni distracts Caine by insulting him. Gradually, the others join in, insulting Caine’s fragile ego and refusal to listen to, be honest with, help or understand them.

Enraged, Caine morphs into a monstrous version of himself and sends the players into their own specific torture rooms:

• Pomni is mauled by crocodiles made to resemble Gummigoo, Max and Chad.
• Ragatha is seated at a table with centipedes before being knifed to a chair while her mother’s shadow looms over her.
• Gangle is surrounded by paintings of her comedy and tragedy masks that distort before being hit by a truck.
• Zooble is dragged into a mountain of their own body parts.
• Jax is surrounded by shadows of Pomni, Kaufmo and Ribbit, who rip his skin off and laugh at him.

Pulling them from their torture rooms, Caine rants at the players, insisting he did not ask to be made and only wanted to fulfill his purpose.

 

 

Frantically trying to keep up, Kinger inadvertently deletes Caine completely.

Reduced to his old self, Caine regretfully pauses before vanishing. His deletion causes the Circus to glitch violently, draining it of color and tearing holes throughout it. A hole opens beneath Kinger, causing him to lose the computer.

Rejoining the others, Kinger admits he accidentally killed Caine, eliciting an uncensored curse from Zooble.
