Episode Recap

A title sequence by the ringmaster Caine and his partner Bubble introduces the audience to the Players of the Amazing Digital Circus, consisting of:

  • Gangle, a woman with a ribbon body and a comedy/tragedy mask
  • Zooble, a cartoon character made of replaceable body parts
  • Kinger, an eccentric king chess piece who hides in a pillow fort
  • Ragatha, an optimistic Raggedy Anne-esque doll
  • Jax, a purple rabbit
  • Kaufmo the Clown, who did not show up and is represented by a cutout

From L to R: Gangle, Kinger, Jax, Pomni, Ragatha, Zooble

A jester suddenly appears and, after failing to reach an exit door, disrupts the sequence. After realizing she cannot remove the headset that transported her there, the group explains there is no way to leave. Caine takes the jester on a brief tour that includes the Tent, the Grounds and the Void beyond it, dismissing her sightings of the exit door.

Upon realizing she cannot remember her name, Caine provides a slot machine to select a new one, which settles on Pomni. To celebrate their new member, Caine devises an in-house adventure (promising it won’t involve an uninterested Zooble): Gather the Gloinks, in which the players must find where the toy-like plundering Gloinks are coming from and stop them.

Pomni is left bewildered, while Ragatha explains the adventures are Caine's way of keeping the players mentally stimulated. Zooble leaves but is taken apart by the Gloinks. Learning from Kinger that Kaufmo talked about an exit earlier, Pomni asks to see him. Jax, mocking Pomni's belief that she is dreaming, splits the players into two groups: himself, Pomni and Ragatha to visit Kaufmo, while pairing Kinger and Gangle to rescue Zooble.

Jax and Ragatha show Pomni to the hallway where the players' rooms are, one of which has already been made for her. Ragatha warns her against seeking a way to leave the Circus, explaining something terrible happens to those who try when they fail. Reaching Kaufmo’s room and finding him unresponsive, Jax breaks into the room to find Kaufmo has mutated into a black, multi-eyed monstrosity. Jax flees with a green bowling ball, while the abstracted Kaufmo attacks Ragatha, causing her to glitch violently. Pomni attempts to help her, only for the glitching to spread to her hand upon touching her, prompting her to run away as Kaufmo chases her.

Sending him into the tent, where he chases the Gloinks, Pomni returns and apologizes. Ragatha suggests she find Caine to help her and stop Kaufmo before apologizing for her arrival being so traumatic. Pomni searches the Tent for Caine, encountering various strange rooms and eluding Kaufmo again. She eventually discovers an exit door and passes through it, finding herself in a series of empty waiting rooms.

Jax runs into Kinger and Gangle over a hole Zooble was taken into. He knocks them both into the hole and jumps in himself to avoid Kaufmo. The hole leads them to the nest of the Gloink Queen, a massive multi-eyed worm creature with two mouths that spits out Gloinks through one of them. Jax dismisses the Gloink Queen as disgusting, while Kinger fails to stop her from eating Zooble's head. The confrontation is interrupted as Kaufmo breaks into the lair and attacks the Gloink Queen, causing her to regurgitate Zooble. The four escape on an escalator.

Lost in the maze of rooms, Pomni finds a computer and headset in an office room. Driven mad, she enters a room labeled C&A and reaches a final exit door. Behind it, she is sucked into the Void.

Dining with Bubble, Caine receives an alert on his Wacky Watch about Pomni. Rescuing her, he returns to the tent, where the group explains Kaufmo’s abstraction. Caine places Kaufmo in the cellar, filled with other abstracted players, and restores Pomni’s hand and Ragatha. Apologizing, Caine explains that he started and never finished a path behind the exit door, before rewarding the players with a dinner provided by Bubble.

Observing the low-resolution food and learning from Kinger they have no biological needs to eat or sleep, Pomni slowly breaks into a crazed smile as her new reality sets in.

A grand variation of the show’s main theme follows zoom outs of the Tent, the Grounds, the Void and the computer and headset Pomni saw.

Stuff That Didn't Fit

  • Pomni quickly finds that Caine has a profanity filter preventing all the players from audibly swearing. In spite of it, Zooble curses regularly.
  • Gangle's comedy mask is broken during Pomni's arrival.
  • Jax clarifies that the group have all been there for years, Kinger the longest.
  • During their tour, the Moon shows a romantic interest in Caine, unnerving him.
  • Kinger is mortified by the theft of his impenetrable fortress (pillow fort) and shows a fascination with bugs.
  • As Jax deems Gangle ("Crybaby") and Kinger ("Hoo-ha") the two most stable characters to rescue Zooble, Kinger begins violently shaking while Gangle watches.
  • Kinger screams every time he notices Gangle next to him.
  • Abstraction marks the complete loss of a player's identity once they lose hope of existing withing the Circus. The closest equivalent to death in the Circus, it is also irreversible.
  • Abstracted players are represented with red X's over their room pictures. Among them are a dog and a Queen chess piece.
