Recap - The Amazing Digital Circus Episode 03 - The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor

 Original Airdate:

A horror-themed adventure pairs Pomni and Kinger in a haunted house. Meanwhile, Caine takes Zooble to therapy.

Episode Recap

Pomni tests what happens when she holds her breath, despite being unable to die from oxygen deprivation. Jax explains different things happen for each of them:

  • Gangle’s mask spins
  • Ragatha’s hair (noodles) stand up
  • Kinger glows
  • Zooble’s limbs straighten
  • Jax refuses to answer and tells the viewers to guess

Taking Kinger’s advice not to think about it, Pomni holds her breath, resulting in her face changing color.

Caine summons the players for his latest adventure, the Mystery of Mildenhall Manor. A haunted house-themed adventure, he challenges the group to uncover the house’s mysteries before being sidetracked by Zooble’s absence and Bubble speaking backwards. Annoyed at having designed the adventure to be mature for Zooble specifically, he nonetheless sends them in.

Entering the manor, the group encounters Ghostly, a diminutive ghost who offers them two doors: A normal door (rated “Rated WOW for all ages!”) and a scary door (“Rated AAAAA for mature Zoobles only!”). Pomni, on edge already, screams at the sight of Ghostly, causing her eyes to fall out in a Wild Take. Jax sucks Ghostly into a vacuum (having misunderstood the instruction) and throws Gangle’s comedy mask into the “normal” door, revealing a gaping mouth behind it. Kinger leaps in to retrieve the mask, inadvertently dragging Pomni with him.

Caine summons Zooble for a therapy session to determine why they don’t participate in his adventures. Zooble remains apprehensive and evasive, while Caine struggles with being able to listen.

Pomni and Kinger land in a study with nightmarish masks of the players' faces and an unusual head mounted as a trophy. Kinger plays a tape from Baron Theodore Mildenhall, who explains he tracked the creature down and took its head as a prize. The two find an elevator locked by a gate, prompting them to search for the key, to Pomni’s increasing frustration. Entering an office, Kinger plays another tape from Mildenhall, explaining that the creature followed him to his home, and warns the players not to lose track of the head. After the lights shut off, the head appears and chases them. Pomni and Kinger escape into the elevator, which takes them further into the depths of the house.

In the therapy session, Caine rejects Zooble’s assertion that he uses the adventures to torture the players (“Any torment I inflict is 100% accidental, like any good war criminal!”). Zooble finally admits that they hate their body and find none of the parts Caine supplies them with fit. With Caine unable to properly grasp their feelings, Zooble further elaborates on being the only one willing to criticize Caine’s adventures. Caine insists his adventures are the only thing he is good at, and begins causing the circus to begin glitching at the thought of being bad at it. Abruptly forgetting it, he tries to continue the session, annoying Zooble.

Pomni and Kinger land in the mansion’s wine cellar, finding another recording from Mildenhall along with his corpse and a shotgun. In the tape, Mildenhall admits to accidentally killing his wife in paranoid fear over the creature. Pomni takes Mildenhall’s shotgun and gives it to Kinger. Cornered by the creature’s head and body, Kinger shoots them both. Mildenhall’s recording reveals the creature to be an angel, and that he was sent to Hell for harming it. As Kinger wonders how Mildenhall could make the recording from Hell, he and Pomni are dragged into the floor, where Mildenhall announces his intent to use their bodies to escape.

In the mansion, Ragatha and Gangle share tea with the ghost of Mrs. Mildenhall. Retrieving a restrained Jax in a wagon, the two are rewarded for achieving a pacifist route, but must wait until Pomni and Kinger return.

Pomni and Kinger reach Hell, a dark and apparently empty chamber. Finding their way to the Hall of the Damned, Kinger observes spirits crossing throughout and uses his eye to find an exit at the end. Pomni attempts to run through, but is possessed by the spirits. Retrieving her, Kinger beats the souls out of her with the shotgun. Distressed with her experiences in the Circus leading her to Hell, Pomni breaks down.

Musing about his computer sciences background, Kinger apologizes for his part in them ending up in Hell, prompting Pomni to notice his lucid state. Kinger admits his faculties return in darkness, and that one of his few remaining memories involve his last moments with his abstracted wife, an entomologist who inspired his fascination with bugs. Despite his experiences, he admits he finds Pomni to be strong and encourages her to value the people around her.

Remembering Mildenhall’s tape, Kinger realizes they have to hold their breath to escape.
Taking Kinger’s advice not to think about it, Pomni holds her breath with him, allowing the two to leave unhindered.

Making their way to the entrance, the two reunite with Ragatha, Gangle and Jax. Kinger praises Pomni for her bravery, despite no longer remembering their conversation. Pomni thanks Ragatha for trying to help her and apologizes for not being appreciative of her efforts.

Returning the Circus tent, Pomni watches as Kinger goes back to his pillow fort, and admits to Jax she enjoyed her time with him.
