Recap - The Amazing Digital Circus Episode 07 - Beach Episode

Caine announces he has no adventures planned for the day and, after consulting a Chinese Room (to Kinger’s amusement) and Bubble, suggests they go to the Digital Lake and meet the unintelligent NPCs there.

After taking turns in a machine that turns their normal clothes into beachwear, the players spend time at the beach. Diving to find Ragatha’s fallen eye button, Pomni encounters two badly animated fish, one of whom challenges her to find his treasure chest before finding it empty. Meanwhile Zooble confronts an withdrawn Jax, admitting they are overcoming their body dysmorphia and encouraging him to open up to someone, prompting him to leave. Pomni, encountering a Shrimp NPC, notices the players being watched by a mannequin NPC. After seeing the Sun has fried the Shrimp, she leaves to confront the mannequin.

Isolating himself in his room, Jax looks at a photo of himself, Kaufmo and Ribbit, a frog player. Noticing Ribbit’s fingers appearing through a hole in a wall, Jax reaches for and touches them. Transported into a colorful realm with Kaufmo’s and Ribbit’s faces appearing throughout, Jax relaxes as he approaches a light and nearly abstracts before being woken by Pomni.

Exiting his room, Pomni introduces him to the NPC, who says he is a human like the others but able to sneak around Caine due to being made to look like the mannequin NPCs. The figure insists he knows of a way back to the real world, and that they need to enter the Chinese Room to avoid Caine’s surveillance. Exhausting his supply of keys and failing to unlock the room, Jax finds the door was never locked to begin with, allowing them to enter. Pomni attempts to find Kinger, but the figure asks her not to over a falling out they once had.

In the room, the figure, calling himself Abel, explains that he and Kinger were once employed by a company called C&A, who began placing employees and later random people into stasis pods before uploading them to the Circus. Abel suggests that using a master console in Caine’s office will release the players. Jax, distrustful, insinuates the entire situation is a ruse by Caine. Abel apologizes for not reaching out to them sooner and draws a face on himself to distinguish him from other NPCs.

Due to his ability to sneak and find keys, Abel assigns Jax get the key to Caine’s office. Getting Caine’s attention, he brings the two to a diner. Caine shows him photos of the C&A office and admits his fascination with the outside world (calling it the “macroverse”). Feigning interest in Caine’s interests and hobbies, Jax causes him to glitch and freeze long enough to get the key from Caine’s mouth.

Pomni and Ragatha follow Abel to get administration privileges for the master console. The two share their experiences with Kinger, both admitting they trust him. Pomni believes Kinger knows more about the Circus than anyone else suspects and is apprehensive over Abel’s refusal to involve him. Confirming he does, Abel insists things are complicated between himself and Kinger. Prompted by Ragatha, he admits uncertainty to the fates of abstracted players like Kaufmo and Ribbit. 

Waiting on Jax, Zooble and Gangle decide to tell Kinger. Finding him in his pillow fort, the two explain Abel’s claims, but Kinger appears unfamiliar with him. Before they can talk further, Jax appears and reveals the key.

Entering the administration room, Pomni requests administration privileges for Kinger. As she and Ragatha reaffirm their trust him, Abel considers him irresponsible.

Returning to the Circus, Abel hands out the administrator passes. Ragatha calms an argument between Zooble, who wants to leave, and Jax, who remains suspicious of Abel. Pomni offers a pass to Kinger, who attempts to warn her about something but forgets as he leaves the darkness of his pillow fort.

Abel mashes the players into balls, throwing them into a hot air balloon that serves as the entrance to Caine’s office. With Pomni the last player left, he tells her to make the right choice before sending her in.

Entering Caine’s elaborate office, the players find globes containing the worlds they were sent to in their adventures. Jax pauses and looks forlornly into one containing a snowy mountain. Finding a hallway at the back, the players reaffirm their bonds, while Jax remains behind and becomes anxious.

The players reach the master console and are presented with two buttons: a red one that will leave them in the circus, and blue button which will disconnect them. Suspicious, Pomni argues against pressing either of them, leading to tension between them. Jax, panicking and suddenly overcome with flashes to his past life, rushes forward and presses the red button.

As the players grasp what has happened, Caine appears and congratulates them for picking the “good ending,” in which they chose to remain with him in the circus. Confirming the entire situation was an adventure orchestrated by himself, Caine applauds his partner, Abel, before deleting him. Believing they would never have pressed the blue button, Caine admits he left programming it to Bubble.

Initially reduced to fits of laughter for being rightly suspicious of Abel, Jax rages over the lengths he had gone through to trick them, before realizing – through use of the Stupid Sauce and Jax’s veganism – that Caine, contrary to his own claims, can manipulate the players’ minds. As Pomni realizes this includes their names, Caine defensively insists he can only do so temporarily, admitting his attempts to do so more extensively have had bad outcomes. The discovery prompts Kinger to remember Scratch, the first player to abstract.

Realizing his actions have made himself the target of the players' ire, Caine quickly leaves.
