A mishap sees the group sent into the past with familiar faces waiting.
Episode Recap
The group notices the absence of the Scythe of Time and the Crystal of John Dee, artifacts collected during their service with the Library. As Vikram enters with a yellow scarf, Mrs. Astolat demands to see him. Talking about it, they overhear Vikram yelling at Mrs. Astolat for keeping secrets from him before he abruptly leaves. Mrs. Astolat admits her awareness that Vikram has been stealing artifacts to build a time machine to go back to 1847.
While Vikram assembles his time machine, Lysa, Connor and Charlie track the artifacts and confront him. As they confront him, Vikram insists he has greater responsibilities than to the Library. The resulting struggle sees all four holding onto the time machine as it transports them to the year 847.
The group finds themselves in a Slavic medieval town. With the time machine overheated, they are forced to wait until it cools down to use it again. Viewed as sorcerers by the townsfolk, they are quickly arrested.
Meanwhile, a spy reports to Lancelot Dulaque about the presence of magic. Believing his search to be over, he orders his men to the village.
Placed in a cell, Charlie, Lysa and Connor criticize Vikram for his actions. The Chieftain, believing them to be sorcerers, orders them to be tortured before sending his advisor Elenore to interrogate them, who they recognize as Mrs. Astolat. Despite initially believing her to undercover, they quickly realize she does not know them. When Charlie addresses her by her modern name, Elaine, she requests time alone with them. After she suspects they are agents of Lancelot, the group realizes that she is actually Elaine of Astolat and hiding to protect Lancelot's shield, which grants immortality to its wielder.
Lancelot and his men enter the village, ordering the Chieftain to be tortured about the shield’s location. The group manages to convince Elaine that she will know them in the future and to trust them with the shield’s safety. Leaving, Elaine takes Charlie with her, while Vikram, Lysa and Connor observe Lancelot’s men taking the time machine. With Charlie, Elaine admits she was once a knight of Camelot and Lancelot’s lover, having left him after he became corrupted; afterward, he had her story removed from the record.
Vikram conspires to let himself be caught to distract Lancelot’s men so Connor and Lysa and steal the time machine. Insisting he can handle being tortured, he offers himself to Lancelot. As Vikram is tied to a rack, Lysa and Connor manage to sneak into the cellar as he succumbs to the torture. Lysa uses the time machine to create an electromagnet, trapping the guards to cell bars and allowing Connor to incapacitate the torture keeper. After freeing Vikram, the three head outside to find Lancelot waiting for them. Having anticipated their plan, he orders them burned at the stake.
Tied up in the town square, Lysa and Connor disparage Vikram for his actions. Apologizing, Vikram explains that Mrs. Astolat revealed that Anya was pregnant when he went into the time bubble. Enraged and hurt at learning he had family left behind in 1847, he planned to return to them. Lysa is shaken to learn that her connection to Anya makes her and Vikram distant relatives. Regretful of his part, Vikram asks Lancelot to release Lysa, Connor and the Chieftain; unsympathetic, Lancelot refuses.
Believing Vikram has failed, Elaine prepares to leave them. Reminding her of her oath as a knight of Camelot, Charlie insists the Library serves the same purpose and pressures her to help them.
As Lancelot prepares to burn them, Elaine presents herself and offers to trade the shield in exchange for Vikram, Connor, Lysa and the Chieftain. On his knight’s honor, Lancelot accepts. As Elaine grants him the shield, Lancelot uses its power to become immortal and strike down the soldiers from freeing the others. Renouncing his loyalty to Camelot and his honor, Lancelot declares himself Dulaque and orders the four burned.
Initially shaken, Elaine challenges Dulaque to combat. After besting him, Dulaque orders his soldiers to shoot her. Charlie manage to incapacitate them and gives her the shield. Using its power to drive them off, Elaine becomes immortal herself. As Charlie extinguishes the flames, Elaine mocks Dulaque for his loss; without the respect of his men and his own rejection of honor, she leaves him humiliated and alone. Nevertheless, he vows to return one day.
As Vikram repairs the time machine, he offers Elaine instructions on how to contact the Library and his scarf. In exchange, Elaine grants them the shield. Their mission accomplished, they return to 2025.
Returning to the Annex, they are greeted by Mrs. Astolat. Vikram privately confronts her, realizing now their experience has been a time loop. Mrs. Astolat reveals Vikram’s yellow scarf clued her to the day they were set to go back and meet her in the past.
Talking with Lysa, Vikram reaffirms that they changed nothing and remain better for it. The two begin to reconsider their relationship, now knowing they are family.
