A Librarian from the past appears in modern-day Serbia, resulting in magic being released into the world and a creature looking to find a host.
Episode Recap
In 1847, the Serbian occult empowered military force Gregor’s Hammer has discovered the tomb of Attila the Hun. General Bogdan Gregor summons his advisor Vikram Chamberlain into the tomb to witness as his followers unseal the Sword of Mars, which Gregor intends to use to conquer Europe. Before he can take it, Vikram replaces it and subdues Gregor’s men. Revealing himself as a Librarian, he denounces Gregor’s evil intentions and seals him in a time bubble. Trapped in it himself, Vikram’s planned escape is thwarted when his assistant is killed attempting to free him. As Gregor prepares to kill him, Vikram is pulled out by modern Librarian Jacob Stone.
As Vikram struggles to adapt to the modern Belgrade, Serbia, Jacob reveals he cannot be sent back to his own time. Vikram leaves him to find his Library Annex, stored in a castle currently refitted in a museum. In the castle’s lower levels, Vikram finds the Annex missing. Discovering a painting of his lover Anya, he promises to find a way to restore it.
At the museum, Lysa Pascal is granted a tour of the castle, having inherited it following her parents’ deaths in a car accident. Overwhelmed, she asks her guide, Mrs. Astolat, about the possibility of selling it. At the same time, historian and podcaster Connor Green films his efforts to sneak around the castle to find the Annex. Both find their way into the room with Anya’s painting, alarming Lysa due to her resemblance to the painted woman.
Vikram makes his way to the bottom of a well. Parting stones at the bottom of it, he releases a stream of magical energy that restores the Annex around Lysa and Connor. Vikram’s appearance startles them, leading them to fumble with a stone and prompting Lysa to leave from shock. Observing a glowing mark on Connor’s hand, Vikram realizes they had touched the Stone of Kraljevic and inadvertently summoned a Drekavac.
As the three hide in the Annex, Jacob scares the Drekavac off. Criticizing Vikram for unleashing the magical stream into the world and using magic in his missions (now forbidden for modern Librarians), he tasks the three with locating the Drekavac while he attempts to halt the flow from the well.
Tracking the Drekavac’s tears using a scrying glass, Vikram is temporarily overwhelmed by the modern world before rushing into a church to get holy water. Vikram’s plan to kill the creature places him at odds with Lysa’s interest in capturing and studying it. The three follow the Drekavac into an alley, where it subdues Vikram and advances on Lysa and Connor. Before it can attack, they rescued by Charlie Cornwall, who injures and scares off the Drekavac before identifying herself as Vikram’s Guardian.
Vikram’s rebellious and vicious methods put him at odds with the rules of the modern day Librarians Charlie and Jacob want him to operate by. Returning to the Annex, Vikram’s research determines the Drekavac is the grief and rage driven soul of an unbaptized and abandoned child. Connor and Lysa’s deductions lead Vikram to conclude the Drekavac has possessed someone genetically vulnerable to magic. Determining the bloodline of Jakim Lynch is the most susceptible, the group heads out to find his modern ancestor.
The group locates the current address, which Vikram discovers bears the seal of Gregor’s Hammer. Entering the building, Vikram and Charlie find it inhabited by a heavy metal band using the title as their band name. The group’s manager, Danica, tells them where to find their leader, Winslow Lynch. After calling Jacob – who is still struggling to halt the flow of magic from the castle – Charlie privately tells Vikram about his notorious reputation amongst Librarians, citing the consequences of his use of the time bubble to trap Gregor as proof of his recklessness before calling him a danger to himself.
Connor and Lysa restock on holy water. After Lysa dismisses Connor’s interest in the supernatural, he reveals his past as a teacher and studies of history that led to him learning about the occult. Lysa in turn reveals her intent to use science to predict the future and study magic as a science after her parents’ deaths.
Finding the venue, Vikram fears the use of the concert will allow the Drekavac to infect all the concertgoers. The group finds Winslow Lynch rehearsing in the back, leading Vikram to plan to reveal Connor and Lysa to him to draw out the Drekavac. Upon meeting him, Winslow is unaffected, revealing that Danica is both his sister and the host of the Drekavac. Vikram’s holy water fails to affect the creature, forcing the group to flee in the band’s van. Having been dropped in the scuffle, the scrying glass is found by Winslow Lynch.
Evading the Drekavac, the group hides in the tunnels of a Roman aqueduct. There, Vikram and Charlie agree to kill the Drekavac, despite knowing the act will also kill Danica. Discussing the failure of the holy water, Lysa and Connor realize that modern dams and waterways have affected the flow of the original holy water. As Charlie fends off the Drekavac, Connor and Lysa fill one of Vikram’s flasks with holy water, stored in the aqueduct, and use it to paralyze the creature.
Seeing Charlie prepare to kill the Drekavac, Lysa and Connor implore them to find another way to neutralize it without killing Danica. Remembering the Drekavac was an abandoned and unbaptized child, Vikram baptizes it with its own tears, permitting it pass on and freeing Danica just as Jacob appears to help.
The group returns to the Annex through a magic door crafted by Jenkins to transport the Librarians anywhere in the world. Despite Vikram observing the use of magic for the door, Jacob continues forbidding him to use magic at all. Jacob reveals that Connor and Lysa will be sent away (Connor’s video of finding the Annex to have been deleted), with Vikram to be sent to the Main Library with no authority and Charlie to be sent back to the military. Vikram reiterates his duty as a Librarian to fix the matter himself. Jacob reluctantly agrees, giving the team six months to do so before leaving.
While Charlie helps Connor find his things, Vikram privately thanks Lysa for reminding him to resolve the Drekavac compassionately. As Vikram and Charlie leave to handle the matter of mummies on the loose, Connor and Lysa choose to stay and help them. While leaving, the group fails to notice a painting of Gregor with Anya, his fiancé.
Elsewhere, Winslow Lynch surveys his apartment with the scrying glass. Focusing it on a painting of General Gregor, he discovers a window into the time bubble Gregor remains trapped in. Seeing his seal on Lynch’s equipment, Gregor laughs sinisterly.
