Recap - The Librarians: The Next Chapter 1x06 And the House of Cards

Original Airdate: June 23, 2025

When an unknown force separates Vikram from Charlie, Lysa and Connor, the two parties must work separately to find the cause and reunite.

Episode Recap

The team recovers the Dagger of Seraphim, allegedly forged by the Devil and capable of killing undead things. Despite their success, Lysa, Charlie and Connor are aggravated that Vikram destroyed the site it was held in to obtain it. Connor views the matter as a sign that Vikram still does not see them as a team, prompting Vikram to hand him the dagger before they pass into the Annex’s magic door.

Upon passing through, Lysa, Connor and Charlie enter a mansion while only Vikram returns to the Annex. Connor and Lysa suspect it is a challenge from Vikram, although Charlie expresses doubt. Venturing further into the house, they find it occupied by a wild assortment of partygoers from the early 20th century, consisting of:

  1. The actor, vain Chauncey Cooper
  2. The excessively passionate lovers Philip and Vera
  3. Yvette Laszlo, a singer who flirts with Connor
  4. The Mysterious Mortadello, a magician who impresses Connor but not Charle and Lysa
  5. A Silent Friar
  6. Princess Lucille, a distressed young girl
  7. Sister Annabelle, a nun and Princess Lucille's caretaker
  8. Madame Visconti, a world-renowned tarot reader

As Madame Visconti begins her reading, Chauncey Cooper is murdered during an abrupt power outage. Charlie determines he was killed by the Dagger of Seraphim, which Connor realizes was stolen. Charlie resolves to take charge of the situation to find the killer and retrieve the dagger. The three split up to speak to the guests.

Connor questions Mortadello, who takes the opportunity to perform magic tricks. He then questions Philip and Vera, inadvertently dredging up Philip’s relapse to gambling and Vera’s affair with Cooper. Lysa attempts to question Yvette and a bartender who pressured Cooper into sitting in the chair he was killed in, neither of whom provide satisfactory answers. Charlie questions the Silent Friar and Sister Annabelle. The Silent Friar (writing his answers out) explains his vows of silence and not to kill, while Sister Annabelle remains cagey, indifferent to Bible verses and abruptly leaves at 9:00.

Left in the Annex himself, Vikram struggles to figure out how to use the magic door (which only Charlie can operate). Finding his research fruitless, he eventually uses the Annex’s magic pendulum to identify their location. Taking the pendulum with him through the magic door, Vikram is brought to a dilapidated mansion.

Regrouping, Connor, Lysa and Charlie suspect the magic door could have been hacked to divert them to the mansion for someone to steal the Dagger. Suspecting Mortadello as a magician, the three search for him before they find him murdered. Sending the guests back to their rooms, they find a secret passageway to the room where Cooper was murdered. Finding a ruby from the Dagger of Seraphim in the passageway and remembering that Sister Annabelle and Princess Lucille stood next to it during the first murder, they three resolve to find Sister Annabelle.

Entering the mansion, Vikram is led to Madame Visconti. His demands for Charlie, Lysa and Connor’s location ignored, he reluctantly sits down to a tarot reading.

Unable to locate Sister Annabelle, the three regroup, narrowly avoiding a falling chandelier. Princess Lucille, witnessing the incident, says she has lost track of her and runs away. Connor admits he feels responsible for the murders by losing the Dagger and fears the situation will prove to Vikram their unfitness to work for the Library. Attempting to escape the mansion, the three witness a hooded figure stalking outside the grounds. Madame Visconti identifies the figure as Death and declares they cannot leave.

Using her tarot cards, Madame Visconti reveals the mansion was constructed by the Sforza family
in the 15th century as a prison for the Devil. Connor identifies Madame Visconti’s deck as the Sforza Deck, the oldest surviving tarot deck in the world, and realizes the mansion and the guests are manifestations of the deck. Using the cards to identify the three Keepers – The Fool (Chauncey Cooper), The Magician (Mortadello) and The High Priestess – the group realizes the Devil is killing them using the Dagger of Seraphim, as they are manifestations of the cards and never alive. Suspecting Princess Lucille is the High Priestess, the group resolve to find and protect her. Madame Visconti reveals that Vikram will not be able to enter the mansion without Death coming for him.

Lysa, Connor and Charlie find Sister Annabelle assailing Princess Lucille. Before she can explain herself, Lucille stabs her in the back with the Dagger of Seraphim. Confirming that she is the Devil, Lucille admits she stole the Dagger when Connor attempted to comfort her and rerouted the magic door upon being alerted to the Dagger’s discovery.

With her keepers eliminated, Vikram’s arrival into the mansion deck appears to seal her victory. As Connor retrieves the Dagger, Lucille realizes from his casual demeanor that Vikram is attempting to trick her as she had been before. Taking the Dagger from Connor, Vikram stabs himself. Death enters the mansion, restoring the protective enchantments and reviving the keepers.

Revived and waking in the real world, Vikram explains it was his
death – that of a real person’s – that allowed Death, also a force of renewal, recreate the prison. Madame Visconti gifts Vikram the Sforza Deck before vanishing. Back in the Annex, Vikram accepts responsibility for his actions unwittingly nearly freeing the Devil and permits Connor to place file Sforza Deck in the Library. Researching due to Vikram’s vague recognition of her, Lysa identifies Madame Visconti as a Librarian during the Sforza period, who will forever remain trapped in the deck. Quietly, Vikram admits he now views Charlie, Connor and Lysa as his friends.
