Recap - The Librarians: The Next Chapter 1x04 And the Thief of Love

Original Airdate: June 9, 2025

The Librarians race to Paris to find a thief who has weaponized love.

Episode Recap

In Paris, a woman enters a bank with a bow and arrow. When security attempts to stop her, she shoots two of the guards and multiple people with magical arrows, causing them to spontaneously fall in love and allowing her to steal a key unhindered.

In the Annex, Vikram Chamberlain has been introduced to Taylor Swift music and is dancing through the halls with wireless headphones until he is reproached by Mrs. Astolat, who directs them to supernatural activity in Paris. The idea appeals to Vikram, whose wife Anya loved the city. As the group leaves, Mrs. Astolat warns Charlie Cornwall not to trust Vikram and to keep him away from Anya’s grave in the city.

In the bank, the group finds the bank’s security footage has been altered to keep the thief out of view while struggling to deal with the lovestruck security. Connor Green is able to find a break in the edited footage to show the key was used to open a vault hiding a safety deposit box. While discussing the matter, Vikram is appalled at the sight of the Eiffel Tower before announcing the person whose help they need is Cupid, the God of Love.

The group finds Cupid a drunken and slovenly mess, dismayed at the rise of dating apps and finding modern peoples' ideas of relationships shallow and superficial. Connor and Lysa Pascal defend the use of the Internet for relationships, which Cupid and Charlie both insist do not constitute real love. Cupid reveals that he once denied Vikram’s request to disrupt Anya’s engagement to General Bogdan Gregor (of Gregor’s Hammer) by having the general fall in love with someone else, forcing Vikram to win Anya’s love for himself. Declining to help, Cupid admits he buried his bow and arrows, though he cannot remember where.

Returning to the Annex, the group finds the enchanted pendulum pointing at different areas of the city. Connor records the pendulum on his phone, using it to find where the pendulum has stopped most frequently to find the highest source of magic in the city. Arriving at the site, Vikram rejects Connor’s insistence that he and Lysa are Librarians, owing to the fact he and Lysa were not invited by the Library.

The team finds their way into a cellar, finding a series of unremarkable items including a ring and bottles of wine. Before they can investigate further, the woman appears. Vikram chases after her, only to be shot in the back by one of Cupid’s arrows; lovestruck, he allows her to escape.

Returning to Cupid, the God of Love suggests that the woman has her sights set on a specific person, although he refuses to help find out who. When Cupid passes out, the non-Librarians bring him to the Annex, where Charlie and Mrs. Astolat attempt to sober him up. Connor determines from a crest found on items from the site that the likely target is Guy Leroy.

Connor, Lysa and Vikram meet with Guy. While rude and boorish to his current secretary, he identifies his former secretary Marie as the thief. Guy refuses to discuss the contents of his safe deposit box, while Vikram, still affected by the arrow, is righteously offended by his behavior. Leaving, Guy shows a large Fabergé egg that he intends to unveil the next day.

In the Annex, Cupid dismisses Charlie’s conviction in serving the Library before casually revealing his awareness that Vikram had been shot by one of his arrows.

Lysa, Connor and Vikram stake out the building where Guy Leroy plans to show off the Fabergé egg. Vikram spots Marie and leaves to warn her, offering his assistance in her mission. As Charlie arrives to warn them, they witness Marie and Vikram leaving. Mrs. Astolat impresses upon the danger of Vikram’s rogue nature and knowledge aiding a thief. The group figures that Leroy possesses the Hen with Sapphire Pendant, one of seven missing Fabergé eggs, and that Marie plans to steal it. Charlie and Connor reluctantly agree the only way to free Vikram from his infatuation with Marie is with Cupid’s help.

Marie explains to Vikram that she had been enamored with Guy Leroy until he attempted to seduce her. Infuriated by her rejection, he fired her and used his wealth and influence in the city to damage her reputation; she is using Cupid’s arrows to use love as a weapon against him in her revenge. Dismissing her plan to steal the Fabergé egg, Vikram suggests a more elaborate plan to humiliate Leroy by using the power of an arrow’s smoke to inspire people in the museum to steal everything.

A newly sober and angry Cupid refuses to help the group, calling Lysa, Connor and Charlie out for their insecurities and inability to form meaningful connections before refusing to call out Mrs. Astolat. The group decides to try and make new arrows for Cupid, who rejects the possibility due to his lack of faith in the existence of true love in the modern world. Despite it, Connor, Charlie and Lysa figure on a way to use the Eiffel Tower as means of being able to help.

Overnight, the three devise a way to charge a new assembly of arrows using a storm and a rocket fired from the Eiffel Tower. With the Tower closed due to the storm, Connor climbs and mounts the rocket on the Eiffel Tower, which Lysa fires into the storm. The resulting electrical charge fries all but one of the arrows. Witnessing the charge spiral down the Eiffel Tower, Vikram leaves to stop the three from interfering. Charlie leads Vikram on a chase into a cemetery, where she forces him to view Anya’s grave; the shock breaks him free of his enchanted love. His senses restored, Vikram reaffirms his pain is symbolic of his true and continued love for Anya to Cupid.

Inspired by Vikram’s declaration, Cupid reclaims his title as the God of Love, thwarting Marie’s plans and piercing her with his new arrow. Freed from her anger, Marie apologizes for her actions, which Vikram and Cupid cite as having been overwhelmed by the power of the arrows. Marie reveals the item stolen from the safety deposit box was proof Guy Leroy had been stealing from his own company, to which Cupid and Vikram agree to ensure he faces justice.

Returning to the Annex, Vikram thanks Charlie, Connor and Lysa for helping him, apologizing for his earlier remarks dismissing them. His opinion now changed about the Eiffel Tower, Lysa and Connor suggest other buildings to show him. Charlie apologizes to Mrs. Astolat for revealing Anya’s grave to Vikram. Unworried, Mrs. Astolat admits it needed to be done.

Vikram and Cupid watch as Guy Leroy faces an investigation into his company. Cupid shoots him with an arrow, leading a lovestruck Leroy to admit to his crimes and that the Fabergé egg is a fake.
