Recap: NCIS 19x16 The Wake

 Original Airdate: March 21, 2022

A gender reveal party sets NCIS on the path to uncover an unsolved murder.

Episode Recap

A gender reveal party for Isaac and Lola at Norfolk goes disastrously wrong when body parts begin raining from the sky.

At NCIS, McGee is confused by the presence of Curtis Hubley, a cyber consultant when he, Torres and Knight debate the meaning of Parker’s Bandium text on the matter. Investigating the scene, the team clears the pilot and airline of responsibility, while Knight awkwardly reveals the couple’s child to be a girl, to their dismay. Palmer determines the remains have been dead for several months, while Torres discovers an intact finger. Kasie identifies the remains as Emma Radner, the wife of TV salesman Sam Radner. Finding the circumstances of her disappearance before her husband’s trip to Florida suspicious, the team splits to talk to her family and Sam. Knight and McGee speak to Emma’s sister, Molly Stoll and her friends Walt and Nance Freeman.

Meanwhile, Torres’ distaste for podcasts spreads into debates among the other agents. Based on organic secretions found on Emma’s remains, Kasie determines they were eaten by vultures that regurgitated them upon being startled by the plane. Hubley manages to direct them to Twin Rivers Park. Using his knowledge of vultures (“I’m a fan of fowl”), Parker manages to find Emma Radner’s body. Knight goes to question Sam, who quickly guesses the discovery and prepares to commit suicide, claiming he has already been judged to be guilty from a podcast. While she attempts to talk him down, NCIS and local police surround the house, leading to a tense confrontation between Vance and Captain Crenshaw. In the house, Knight manages to get Sam to talk about the happier moments of his marriage to Emma, claiming the podcast omitted them to create a narrative about his guilt.

At NCIS, Parker and Torres are left investigating while Knight continues talking to Sam. Kasie reveals Emma’s body was left near an ATV trail Sam frequented, further incriminating him. In the house, while Knight reaffirms her intent to have him tried fairly, Sam insists he is innocent before attempting to kill himself. Despite succeeding in saving him, Knight is left shaken from the experience. Outside, Molly accosts Sam, prompting Vance to order him moved away. In Autopsy, Palmer determines Emma died from severe injuries from a fall. In Interrogation, Sam maintains his innocence; based on her experiences, Knight suspects he is. At Forensics, Kasie reveals a pollen residue found on Emma’s ear. Based on the timing, she and Knight conclude Emma was alive during Sam’s trip to Florida, leaving his guilt suspect. Meanwhile, tension ensues due to McGee being credited with one of Torres’ arrests in a podcast.

Faced with a lack of suspects, Parker and Knight consult Sam. Based on his recollections, the team investigate Walt Freeman. Noting each of his teaching assistants were younger women – including Emma – the team believes he was forced into retirement from his otherwise lucrative teaching position for inappropriate relations with his students. Kasie identifies a fingerprint on a vase. Confronting Molly, Walt and Nance, the team identifies Nance as Emma’s killer, having accidentally killed her while believing Emma was carrying on an affair with Walt.

At NCIS, Torres announces his intent to start his own podcast with Kasie, using microphones supplied by Hubley.

At a cemetery, Knight and Sam talk about their shared feelings of loss. Molly appears and apologizes for her treatment of Sam, who forgives her and thanks Knight for saving his life.

Cut To The Chase
