Recap: NCIS 19x03 Road to Nowhere

Original Airdate: October 4, 2021

Gibbs must go on a road trip with LeMere.

Episode Recap

Agent Parker follows LeMere as the latter is hospitalized when Gibbs visits. Believing Gibbs has killed him, Parker castigates him before learning that LeMere will live.

At the Squad Room, Knight has moved to Bishop’s former desk. The team is unable to find any apparent links among LeMere’s victims. Meanwhile, Kasie is annoyed by Palmer’s extreme concern following her being taken hostage, noting they have been through worse. While discussing her struggles to trace LeMere’s financer with McGee, they discover LeMere has been paid by the Pentagon. Torres and Knight visit Lt. Falco, who explains they have been under audit. Falco traces the payment originating from Sonova Industries, but observes no one authorized the payment.

McGee and Parker interrogate a now-hospitalized LeMere. LeMere insists that he was set up by someone who wanted him to be caught. He eventually agrees to locate his first victim – whom he insists will “explain everything” – and demands Gibbs escort him to the site. Neither Gibbs or Vance find the idea appealing, but agree to do so. Parker decides to tag along, despite LeMere’s protest.

At NCIS, the team discovers that Sonova once supplied raw materials before manufacturing themselves. Knight goes undercover at a focus group held in Sonova’s Virginia headquarters. There, she instigates an argument between the focus group attendees and the Sonova employee, allowing her to sneak into the building. Meanwhile, Parker tries to get answers from LeMere, who suggests he and Gibbs are more alike than the latter is willing to accept. While temporarily stopped, Gibbs leaves Parker and drives off with LeMere. LeMere continues to insist he and Gibbs are both killers, eventually provoking him. Gibbs contemplates killing LeMere before deciding against it.

At NCIS, Kasie discovers Sonova has been spying on many of its consumers, including a group of four, three of whom are LeMere’s victims. Of the four, she identifies a potential surviving lead, Libby Alonak. Torres and Knight visit Alonak’s home, finding it abandoned and her decaying body, killed with LeMere’s M.O. With Palmer’s observations, they realize she is LeMere’s first victim. At Parker’s direction, McGee and Torres interrogate Sonya Eberhart, Sonova's C.E.O. While she claims not to recognize LeMere, they eventually pressure her by revealing their awareness of Skylark, their surveillance program. Although Eberhart claims Skylark is actually intended for opposition research, Parker remains suspicious.

Gibbs and LeMere’s road trip ends at a farm. There, LeMere leads Gibbs to a gravestone belonging to his wife. Suggesting Gibbs go fishing in Naktok Bay, Alaska, LeMere taunts him before stepping on a hidden land mine, killing himself. At NCIS, the team establishes the four of LeMere’s victims spied on by Sonova were opponents to their efforts to build a copper mine in Naktok Bay; the remainder killed to hide their connection. Despite having enough to have Eberhart brought back in, the team announces she has already left for Alaska.

Gibbs later calls McGee, confirming he intends to join the rest of the team investigating in Alaska. Hanging up, he stands and looks forlornly at Shannon and Kelly’s grave, focusing on his own name.

Cut To The Chase

NCIS manages to link LeMere’s victims to Sonya Eberhart, CEO of Sonova Industries, finding that they opposed her efforts to build a mine in Alaska. LeMere forces Gibbs to go on a road trip in exchange for information; although Agent Parker rides along, Gibbs leaves him. LeMere draws comparisons to himself and Gibbs before directing him to the mine and committing suicide.
