Recap: NCIS 19x02 Nearly Departed

Original Airdate: September 27, 2021

The NCIS team works to identify the serial killer.

Episode Recap

In the teaser, a man buying paper towels and cleaning supplies is holding a woman captive in a red van.

In lieu of meeting at NCIS, the team is meeting at the McKeevers’ barn, surprised to find that Palmer has oriented the barn’s furnishings to match the squad room. Vance appears and confirms that Gibbs will be reported dead, but the latter remains evasive on his decision regarding staying or returning to NCIS.

The team is called to investigate a murder matching the profile of their serial killer. Meanwhile, Vance announces the suspension of the search for Gibbs, hoping doing so will convince the serial killer. At the murder scene, Palmer determines the body was dumped. Torres and Knight brief the victim’s widower, Phil Hanover, who explains she had a PaceBracelet, leading them to believe they can track where it has been. Knight shares her feelings with Palmer, and admits her annoyance over Torres pushing her to use Bishop’s desk. Palmer admits his belief that Torres is compensating for losing her.

McGee meets with Kasie and is able to trace the victim’s PaceBracelet. The team raids its last location and find a man; Knight and Torres chase him but he manages to escape. Discovering large bleach stains, McGee identifies the apartment as the location where the women were murdered. The landlord identifies the owner as Tom Samuels. Gibbs and McGee confirm his ID is fake, but decide his face is useful. Torres promptly receives a threatening call from “Samuels” and threatens him in turn.

Kasie has difficulty finding Samuels’ true identity. While talking with Palmer, Fornell appears. Admitting he and Palmer share a grief counseling group, he coaxes them into confirming Gibbs is still alive. Meanwhile, Gibbs meets with Warren; while scanning through photos of Samuels, they discover a masked hatted man nearby in many of them.

Fornell finds Gibbs staking out one of the masked man’s locations. Discussing Gibbs’ situation, Fornell bitterly notes he has joined him in losing family and questions what he intends to do for the future. Torres finds the masked man; the two fight before he is arrested. Initially nonchalant and argumentative in interrogation, the man becomes serious when McGee threatens to identify him as a serial killer on the news. Demanding they stop recording him, he identifies himself as FBI Agent Alden Parker, who has been shadowing Samuels for months. Discussing his information with Vance, Parker admits his awareness of Gibbs’ survival and warns him against keeping him involved. Vance refuses to pull him and insists Gibbs stay.

The next day, Knight finds that Torres has moved her supplies to Bishop’s desk. Taking offense, the two argue until Vance defuses the situation. Meanwhile, Gibbs and Fornell investigate Samuels’ basement apartment. Fornell affirms Parker’s legitimacy and briefly spats with Gibbs when Warren arrives to observe the apartment. Gibbs sours when he discovers the supplies Samuels used to create the bomb that nearly killed him.

At NCIS, Kasie manages to track Samuels. Gibbs finds Samuels extracting supplies from a mausoleum and briefly fights him before NCIS and Parker arrive. Although Gibbs momentarily contemplates killing him, he allows them to arrest Samuels, whom they are able to identify as Paul LeMere.

LeMere refuses to talk without his lawyer present. Parker shares his concerns with McGee over Gibbs’ temperament. Knight and Torres make peace over the situation earlier. Torres learns from NCIS’ legal department that LeMere’s lawyer has been dead for ten years. Meanwhile, Gibbs meets with Warren, who announces she intends to take time off with a friend, Mitch (short for Michelle).

Investigating LeMere, Kasie finds he is a former Navy SEAL, having received a BCD in 2003. Discovering that he has been receiving $50,000 every one hundred days from Navis Ventures, the team realizes LeMere is a contract killer. Knight interrogates him over the findings; when she brings up Navis Ventures, LeMere improvises an escape and takes Kasie hostage in the squad room. As he prepares to kill her, Gibbs shoots him.

Cut To The Chase

The team actively begins searching for the serial killer. Their search brings them to blows with FBI Agent Alden Parker, who is also on the killers trail. They eventually manage to identify him as Paul LeMere and arrest him, learning that he is actually a contract killer.
