Recap: NCIS 19x04 Great Wide Open

Original Airdate: October 11, 2021

Gibbs and McGee head to Alaska.

Episode Recap

Parker raids Gibbs’ house, intending to arrest him. Upon finding a large hole in the basement, he calls McGee, demanding to know when he will return. McGee, meanwhile, is in Alaska with Gibbs.

At NCIS, Torres finds that Sonya Eberhart has left to attend a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating Sonova’s copper mine. Knight refers Gibbs and McGee to a boat owned by Libby Alonak’s father, Tunu. Relating to him through the shared loss of their daughters, Tunu explains Libby had been writing an article exposing the toxic fallout of Sonova’s mine. Although McGee believes it was lost after her death, Tunu believes it still exists somehow.

In Washington, Parker explains to Vance the FBI blames Gibbs for LeMere’s death and wants him arrested for Obstruction of Justice. Having offered Gibbs a satellite phone and agreed to send McGee, Vance refuses to offer proof of Gibbs’ whereabouts. Learning about McGee
s trip, Parker decides to head to Alaska to arrest Gibbs himself.

Gibbs and McGee meet with Eberhart at the groundbreaking ceremony. Eberhart denies the possibility of
toxic repercussions from Sonova’s mine and refers them to a report backing her. At NCIS, Palmer finds Ducky, who agreed to write a psychological profile on Libby Alonak for Gibbs. Searching through Libby’s personal effects, Ducky and Palmer find a QR code on her watch, which Kasie discovers links to her article over Sonova’s mine with a now-buried anonymous environmental impact report supporting her.

Kasie identifies the author as Brian Stafford, one of LeMere’s victims. After struggling, Kasie manages to hack Stafford’s computer, finding his report detailing the catastrophic consequences of Sonova’s mine. As it bears Sonya Eberthart's signature, they conclude she knows of it.

In Alaska, Gibbs and McGee tour the waters Sonova’s mine is threatening. As they return to shore, Parker appears and arrests Gibbs, who explains he allowed Parker to track them. Gibbs and McGee impress upon Parker the need to stop Sonova, convincing him to help them.

At NCIS, Knight shares her belief that Eberhart had a partner, although she and Torres disagree over whether Gibbs will be able to break her. Meanwhile, Parker receives a call from FBI Director Sweeney, who is determined to have Gibbs arrested. Gibbs and McGee make their move to arrest Eberhart; before they can finish, they are called by Vance, who orders them to stand down. Eberhart leaves and attempts to call her partner, only to be arrested by Parker. Torres, Knight and Warren arrange a sting to arrest Phil Hanover, who took bribes from Sonova, hired LeMere and arranged to have his wife murdered after she discovered him.

In Alaska, Gibbs shares his belief they have closed their most important case, before instructing McGee to arrest him. Meeting with Parker, he releases Gibbs, convinced of his character after talking with Fornell. Afterward, Gibbs meets with Tunu, who thanks him for solving his daughter’s murder and gifts him a rifle, and gives him her watch – originally his own. Tunu iterates his belief that Libby’s memory lives on with him and in nature, resonating with Gibbs.

At NCIS, Vance meets with Torres and Knight and explains that Parker has been fired for not arresting Gibbs. Vance also confirms that although Gibbs is no longer wanted, he cannot make him return, nor does he believe he wants to.

Flashbacks over the course of the episode show Gibbs meeting with Vance, Ducky and Torres. With each one, Gibbs admits his respect for them and variously admits his belief he will “be okay.”

In the present, Gibbs and McGee are fly fishing; Gibbs reminisces of fishing with his father, calling attention to his peace of mind and regretting they gradually stopped over time. As their plane arrives, Gibbs declines to leave. Although McGee tries to talk him out of it, Gibbs reaffirms his intent to remain, appreciating the time they spent working together.

After sharing an emotional moment, McGee leaves while Gibbs continues, enjoying the tranquility.

Cut To The Chase

The FBI wants to arrest Gibbs for LeMere’s death. Parker follows him and McGee to Alaska, where they are personally investigating victims of Sonya Eberhart’s cover-up of the devastating environmental effects of her copper mine. Parker agrees to help, arresting Eberhart and releasing Gibbs, a decision that results in his firing. With the mission done, Gibbs chooses to stay in Alaska.
