Recap - The Librarians: The Next Chapter 2x09 And the Toy Phone

Original Airdate: August 30, 2026

Charlie's time alone is interrupted when she hears a boy calling through a toy phone.

Episode Recap

A young boy, Jovan, wakes to strange noises in his home. Believing something is after him, he runs from his room and asks for help, though no one acknowledges him. Helpless, a voice calls out and announces it is coming for him.

At the Annex, Lysa and Connor are preparing for an Initiation to the Library, a procedure that will last a whole day. Although Vikram wants to stay behind to help Charlie sort out a box of magical toys, he is required to go with them, leaving Charlie to spend her day in the Annex by herself.

Hearing a phone ringing, Charlie finds the source is a toy phone in the box. Answering it, she hears Jovan on the other end asking for help. Although she initially suspects a trick or foul play, Jovan convinces her he is genuine. Charlie promises to protect him. The Magic Pendulum directs her to his home, prompting her to leave through the Magic Door.

On her way, Charlie insists she fears nothing. Hearing something in the forest, Charlie finds Jacob Stone and Cassandra Cillian also on the scene, having been alerted by their Clippings Book.  Cassandra shows Charlie clippings showing that a family disappears from a local house every 20 years. Charlie explains her use of the phone, though Jacob and Cassandra remain skeptical; upon noticing their Guardian is not present, she stands by her intention to investigate and help Jovan.

The three find a group of houses nearby. Jacob is able to identify the proper house from its architecture. As the door is locked behind them, the three manage to quickly find Jovan in his bedroom. The voice calls for them, declaring a game of tag and prompting the three to leave the room. Unable to escape and concluding the entity intends to keep Jovan imprisoned, the four return to Jovan’s bedroom.

Jovan admits he believes the attacker is the Boogeyman; though Charlie initially dismisses him, Jacob and Cassandra react with alarm. Charlie and Cassandra prepare to investigate signs of the Boogeyman, leaving Jovan with Jacob.

Examining the house, Charlie and Cassandra share their differing stances on fear: Charlie believes being fearful impedes her, while Cassandra believes her fears have helped her over the years, stemming from being driven after learning about her brain tumor. Cassandra finds a bogeyman hole under a couch, using it to identify the Boogeyman they are pursuing as one that feeds on fear of the unknown. Analyzing it, Cassandra concludes another hole would be under a bed.

Meanwhile, Jacob reaffirms to Jovan that they are all afraid but admitting it makes them brave. The Boogeyman hangs up Jovan’s toy phone and snatches him from the bed. Although the three try to hold on, the Boogeyman appears and startles them with their fears, forcing them to let him go. Jacob presses Charlie against following after without a plan. Following his advice and thinking as a Librarian (Vikram), Charlie ties a cord around herself and ventures under the bed. As Jacob finds it unusual for the toy phone to have rung while Charlie was alone, Cassandra concludes it to have been impossible.

Entering the dimension, Charlie finds herself in a dilapidated version of the mansion. Making her way through, she finds Jovan, who shows her a room with the other missing people abducted by the Boogeyman. Charlie sends them to follow the cord, where Jacob and Cassandra help them through to the real world. The Boogeyman severs the cord before Charlie and Jovan can escape, leaving them trapped with him.

Cornered, Charlie attempts to fight him, but is unable to harm him. Declaring himself a creation made by fear, the Boogeyman verbally tears Charlie down before beginning to feed on her and Jovan’s fear. In the real world, Cassandra uses their toy phone to call Jovan’s. Answering, Charlie admits she fears breaking her promise and being weak. Cassandra and Jacob convince to Charlie to own her fear. Accepting, Charlie turns on the Boogeyman. Declaring herself a Guardian and the Library’s power and knowledge as what vanquishes the unknown, she force the Boogeyman to turn his power onto himself, destroying him.

Charlie and Jovan return to the real world. As they do, the people begin vanishing, as does Jovan as he embraces his family. Jacob and Cassandra reveal that Charlie has been using Jovan’s phone, which Jovan’s last moments remained imprinted on before being woken by the Library’s magic in Charlie’s presence. The two confirm Charlie saved Jovan, his family and the others from their imprisonment by the Boogeyman. Reassured, Charlie bids farewell to Jovan as he passes on.

Visiting their Annex, Cassandra marvels at the Magic Pendulum. As they leave, the two reaffirm she is where she belongs.

Later, Charlie greets Vikram, Lysa and Connor as they leave from the Library. As the three figure out she had an adventure of her own, Charlie explains her experience with the Boogeyman.
