Recap - The Librarians: The Next Chapter 1x02 And the Dance of Doom

 Original Airdate: May 26, 2025

A case of mysterious dancing shoes lead the Librarians to discover a sinister plot.

Episode Recap

A dance troupe in a park goes wrong when one the dancers dances uncontrollably into traffic and is hit by a truck. Despite being knocked unconscious, the dancer’s shoes continue dancing.

In the Annex, Connor Green and Lysa Pascal examine the collected artifacts and books before being chastised by Mrs. Astolat, who also advises Charlie Cornwall’s fighting technique before summoning them. Vikram Chamberlain identifies her as the Annex’s caretaker, the two having known each other before Vikram’s imprisonment in the time bubble. Mrs. Astolat unveils a map revealing the spread of magic and a pendulum to identify locations where magical activity has been detected. Connor identifies the story of the injured dancer. Vikram intends to investigate on his own, but Charlie, Connor and Lysa insist on coming along.

At the hospital, the two learn the girl was employed by the National Ballet Company in her first leading role, while Lysa observes a grey streak in the girl’s hair. Arriving at the theater and posing as insurance investigators, the group meet the stressed choreographer Yelena Tarkoff. The group also bears witness to the elderly Artistic Director and former dancer Dame Ana Mirinoff arguing with the theater’s conductor about the play’s tempo and a critic.

Splitting up, Vikram and Charlie speak with Dame Ana, while Lysa talks with Yelena and Connor questions the conductor. Yelena explains that Dame Ana has been forced into retirement and admits to wanting the director job but has only been allowed to follow Dame Ana’s instructions. Lysa sees several pill bottles in Yelena’s purse before she leaves. Dame Ana believes the play to be cursed, having fought to be permitted a final show – a performance of Giselle – before her retirement. The conductor accuses Dame Ana of micromanaging him due to insisting on a faster tempo and views his baton as the most powerful object in the theater.

Regrouping, Lysa and Connor argue over their respective theories: Lysa believes Yelena is drugging the dancers, while Connor believes the baton to be enchanted. The group watch as the replacement understudy, Natalia, takes the stage and suddenly begins dancing uncontrollably. Vikram discovers her shoes to be dancing on their own.

At the Annex, Vikram uses an enchanted microscope to discover a magical rosin coated on the shoes. Charlie leaves to find the rosin box while Mrs. Astolat uses the pendulum to trace the rosin to a forest. Sending Connor and Lysa to the forest, Mrs. Astolat keeps Vikram back to warn him against traveling back in time.

At the theater, Charlie witnesses Yelena refusing to allow the show performance to happen at noon. Finding Natalia on a stairwell, she confides to her about her past as a ballet dancer before giving it up to be a Guardian. She also questions her about Yelena’s refusal to start the show.

In the forest, Vikram, Lysa and Connor discover an ancient Dance Tree, which people would dance under to grant it life and vitality. Lysa discovers the tree has been drained of resin, which the group collectively realizes has been spiked into the rosin box at the theater. Pondering the reason for resin in the rosin, Vikram worriedly identifies the culprit as witch planning to drain the dancers of their vitality; empowered by the magic released from the well, the spell would drain the dancers and audience of their lives.

Vikram returns Conor and Lysa to the Annex, insisting their combativeness would make them vulnerable to witch’s power and instructing them to figure out which witch they are dealing with. Researching with Mrs. Astolat, Connor identifies the witch as Lady Midday, known as the Noon Witch, leading the group to realize the witch, seeking adulation from the crowd, would be dancing on the stage. Mrs. Astolat attempts to send them to the theater through the Annex's magic door, but the witch’s power prevents them for entering, forcing Connor and Lysa to race to theater on bike.

At the theater, Charlie finds Yelena dead before being dragged away. Vikram attempts to warn Dame Ana about the threat before realizing Dame Ana is both the witch herself and Natalia. Ana reveals she has spread the dust around the theater for centuries and plans to use the solstice that day to restore her youth. Vikram attempts to use artifacts from the library to counter Ana’s powers, prompting Ana to tase him unconscious before resuming her guise as “Natalia” to dance onstage.

Lysa and Connor find Charlie being thrown out of the theater. Realizing Natalia is the witch, the three infiltrate the theater and disrupt the show. Charlie impersonates a dancer to stop Ana/Natalia onstage while Connor and Lysa try to disrupt the show from backstage. Despite their interference, the crowd erupts into applause.

Vikram, having resumed consciousness, reveals he had taken over for the conductor during the performance and slowed the music’s tempo. With the slower performance having ended the show 53 seconds after noon, Ana disintegrates as a result of her ritual failing. The audience again breaks into applause.

At the Annex, Vikram and Charlie discuss those under Ana’s control no longer remembering, as well as the original dancer’s recover. Lysa and Connor argue over their failure to stop the show; Vikram corrects them, revealing their interference distracted Ana from recognizing the tempo change and enabled them to succeed. Mrs. Astolat, preparing to go beekeeping, praises Vikram for embracing having a team. Having been pressed about her secrecy earlier, Charlie admits she was once a dancer before becoming a Guardian, to which Connor praises her nonetheless.
