Recap: NCIS 19x08 Peacekeeper

Original Airdate: November 29, 2021

NCIS investigates when a Navy reservist’s body is found in a car at a gun range. Meanwhile, Kasie considers whether to buy a gun.

Episode Recap

At a shooting range, Ned Gorton finds a dead body in a car while resetting a mannequin.

At NCIS, the team is commenting on Kasie’s gym membership when Parker calls them to the scene. McGee identifies the body as Lieutenant Victor Bateson. While Torres is annoyed at the classic car being used for target practice, Ned confirms it was empty the previous night. Despite the numerous gunshots and presence of tequila scent, Palmer confirms Bateson was killed and dumped, but cannot identify which shot killed him, which Parker suspects was the point.

The team learns that Bateson was considered a model officer and held part-time jobs afterward while operating in the Reserves. Palmer confirms how Bateson was killed, but is struggling to locate the fatal slug. Parker and Palmer compare the situation to Operation and relate over children’s games. Knight talks with Harry Day, Bateson’s manager who calls him “Peacekeeper” due to his reputation for settling fights and directs them to Lexi Davis, Bateson’s ex-wife with whom he went through a rough divorce and knows the shooting range. While looking over the car, Torres admits the car is the same make and model as his first car. Knight leaves to meet Parker at Lexi Davis’ house.

Parker relates to Torres’ experience before finding it odd to share two childhood memories that day. Arriving at Davis’ house, the two are surprised to find Kasie there before finding Davis giving a firearms demonstration. Talking privately, Kasie admits she came while considering purchasing a gun for self-defense, motivated primarily by being threatened by Paul Lemere weeks earlier. Lexi insists she and Bateson were amicably divorced despite the actual process, explaining her duty as a marketing director for Zanetta Firearms. She also confirms that Bateson worked as a bouncer for Fairfax Expo Center.

The next morning, Parker finds the expo center is hosting a home security expo. Kasie declines to join the team to help Palmer identify the bullet that killed Bateson. While discussing gun ownerships, Palmer admits his refusal to own one stems from extracting bullets from bodies over the years.

At the expo, the team meet with event coordinator Sonia Bell, who points them to Doris Edwards. Parker and Knight find her reluctance to identify her personal gun suspicious before they are interrupted by Pete Walker, an antique firearms vendor displaced by Bateson. Despite the tension between them, Doris and Pete point to Roy, whom Bateson fought with after finding him selling ammunition in the parking lot. The team apprehends him, finding a small armory in his van.

Roy insists Bateson fought with him to impress Doris, who confirms they were close. She also reveals Davis was paying Bateson alimony and admits fearing her reaction if she found out about their relationship. Knight goes for a private moment in Autopsy but finds Palmer there. She admits feeling tension over the apparent pettiness of the situation. Parker visits Kasie, who has narrowed the kill bullet to three. Afterward, she asks his perspective on owning a gun. Parker acknowledges the possible necessity but also the associated problems.

Torres and Knight interrogate Davis, who appears shocked after learning about Doris’ relationship with Bateson. Palmer and Kasie announce they have found the bullet that killed Bateson. Confirming it came from a Walther PPK, the team interrogates Pete Walter again, who in turn directs them to Harry Day. Harry admits he unwittingly enraged Bateson by drunkenly asking him for a cover charge, resulting in a struggle in which he accidentally shot him and dumped him at the shooting range when Bateson died before they could reach a hospital.

At NCIS, Torres announces he intends to buy the car, which he has now named “Stella.” The team compares the situation to Gibbs and his boats, while Parker likens it to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (and promptly announces his intent to have a checkup due to the childhood references brought up).

The next day, Knight helps Kasie at a gun range. Although she proves her skill, Kasie declines to keep a gun.

Cut To The Chase

The team investigates the death of Lieutenant Victor Bateson, whose body was hidden on a shooting range to hide the kill shot. Despite navigating a web of firearms sales and personal rivalries, they find Bateson was accidentally killed by Harry Day, his manager. While investigating, the team discovers Kasie is debating whether to buy a gun, which prompts her to ask others’ perspectives. Parker relates to the team through childhood memories. Torres is inspired to buy the car Bateson’s body was found in, while Kasie decides not to buy a gun.
