Recap: NCIS 19x06 False Start

Original Airdate: November 1, 2021

The team investigates the murder of a Navy commander and athletic coach while learning more about Parker.

Episode Recap

Felix Cross arrives late to his athletic practice but finds his coach, Navy Commander Henry Davis, absent. Calling his phone, he tracks it down and finds Davis has been murdered.

At NCIS, McGee, Torres and Knight debate the purpose of pastries on Parker’s – formerly Gibbs’ – desk. The three are off-put by Parker’s more casual behavior when they are called to investigate. Although Palmer determines Davis died earlier that morning, he is unable to identify a potential murder weapon. Torres and Knight talk to Felix, who credits Davis to helping him out of alcoholism, but cannot identify who would want to kill him. Investigating Davis’ office, Parker finds a hidden compartment in his desk containing a duffel bag full of performance-enhancing drugs.

The team discovers Davis was recently in contact with the parents of Jamie Anderson, another athlete he previously sponsored and had died in a car accident a year earlier. In Autopsy, Palmer determines that Davis was killed by a blank round fired close to his head. Parker and Knight question Clark and Ashley, Jamie Anderson’s parents. The two speak highly of Davis and take offense to the implication of him doping his athletes. They suggest Davis was distracted but never told them anything. Torres separately talks with Felix, who also denies he was being drugged, while also relating with Torres’ feelings of loss.

Felix directs them to Kyle Seward, a wrestler Davis argued with a week earlier. Based on his extravagant purchases, they suspect him of dealing and using steroids. Torres goes undercover to rope Seward into a deal. Seward instead offers him used clothes. Nonetheless, Torres arrests him.

Seward admits Davis caught him stealing used laundry from other athletes and threatened to report him unless he stopped, but he denies killing him. Although the team are surprised at the market for athletes’ clothes, they confirm Seward closed his account. They also find he began receiving hostile messages from another user and frequent buyer, NavyFan92, in response. Torres responds to a call from Felix, who has relapsed.

McGee meets with Kasie, who clears Felix and Seward of steroid use. She also reveals an unlabeled participation medal in the duffel bag. Based on her research, she identifies a location in Anacostia that NavyFan92 posted from. While staking out the site, Parker admits his interest in finding the team’s “hidden talents” before watching a woman, Dr. Astrid Fellowes, arrive. When they approach, she flees into the building, injuring McGee and escaping into a sterile lab which she threatens to destroy, believing they are Chinese mercenaries. Parker distracts her while McGee manages to hack into her lab from a nearby terminal, allowing them to arrest her.

Parker and Knight interrogate Fellowes. She admits she wanted to study the athletes’ worn clothes to detect gene doping, but denies having anything to do with Davis’ murder. Kasie confirms Fellowes’ alibi. Shortly after, Parker and Torres are called to the stadium, where Felix and Seward have fought. Believing NCIS is doing nothing to clear Davis’ name, Felix quits the program.

At NCIS, Parker dismisses the team's suspicion that he has ulterior motives for wanting to know them. Studying Fellowes’ records of the clothes she received, Kasie identifies Jamie Anderson as the only athlete under Davis to have used performance enhancing drugs. Parker meets with Clark Anderson, confronting him with the medal from the bag and Jamie’s drug use. Clark admits he supplied Jamie with the drugs, which had recently been discovered on the stadium property; when Davis announced his intent to expose Jamie’s drug use despite his parents protests, Clark argued with him and accidentally discharged the blank pistol in his face. Parker arrests him.

Torres is disappointed to learn Felix has been demoted for fighting with Seward. Parker suggests he has a plan to help him. Torres meets with Felix at the track, challenging him to a race and revealing Parker, McGee and Knight there to watch.

Cut To The Chase

The team investigates the death of a Navy coach while trying to figure out Parker’s motives for leaving pastries in the Squad Room. They eventually find that the coach was accidentally killed while arguing with the parent of another athlete who had used performance-enhancing drugs.
