Recap: NCIS 19x18 Last Dance

Original Airdate: April 18, 2022

The release of an arms dealer digs up memories from Torres’ past.

Episode Recap

An arms deal is interrupted by the arrival of Reymundo Diaz, who kills the dealers and after demanding information for Carlos Salazar, who sent him to prison and is actually Torres.

At NCIS, Parker observes McGee and Knight competing to hand in their after-action reports; although Knight hands in her own, Parker reveals McGee emailed his. The three then begin wondering why Torres has been late for the past few weeks before being called to the murder scene. Meanwhile, Torres has actually been seeing Dr. Grace, who believes he is compartmentalizing his feelings and taken to drinking.

At the scene, the team determines the weapons were intended to be delivered to Quantico. State Trooper Phil Collins introduces them to a witness, Travis Cooper. A participant in the deal who narrowly survived the killings by parking out of the way, Cooper identifies Diaz as the killer and mutually recognizes Torres as the man Diaz was asking for. Torres previously arrested Diaz for dealing in stolen weapons by going undercover and being close to his cousin, Maria.

Vance and Parker determine that Diaz was released after bribing a guard a day earlier, although Torres doubts he knows of his real identity. While discussing with Kasie how Diaz managed to make it across the border into Texas without being caught, Torres believes Diaz hid in the trunk of a car, after which he identifies RenĂ© “Renny” Romero from a security photo and who previously tried to kill him.

While driving to Romero’s with McGee, Torres explains he – as Carlos Salazar – convinced Maria to testify against Diaz by lying to her about joining her in Witness Protection. The two are attacked by Renny; chasing after him, they eventually manage to capture him, though Renny reveals Diaz knows of Torres’ real identity.

Interrogating him with Knight, he learns from Renny that Diaz intends to hunt down both Torres and Maria for imprisoning him. Suspicious, Torres demands to meet with Maria’s overseers, Marshall Carter and John Wright. Revealing she was hidden in Maryland and that they have lost contact with her, Torres decides to leave to find her. Meanwhile, McGee and Knight suspect Diaz is switching from dealing weapons to drugs.

Arriving at Maria’s cover home, Parker identifies a bullet hole and blood spatter, angering Torres and prompting Parker to bench him and send him to a safe house. Torres calls Dr. Grace, admitting he feels guilty for abandoning Maria and becoming like his father. Hearing someone approaching, Torres prepares to fight back when he discovers Maria has tracked him down. Maria claims she killed the man sent to kill her and that Carter directed her to the safe house. Having given up her art career before going into Witness Protection, she intends to give up her cover identity, although Torres tries to dissuade her and agrees to stay with her.

At NCIS, Knight reveals she has managed to find that Diaz purchased Perpexofal XR, a leukemia treatment drug. With a diagnosis from Diaz’s prison doctor, the team suspects Diaz is terminally ill and out for revenge. Meanwhile, Maria reveals despite her remaining feelings for him, she resents Torres for forcing her to give up her life. Torres likewise admits that despite it being his mission, he regrets leaving her, leading Maria to conclude someone similarly left him. Changing the subject, Torres gets her to identify her attacker as Pablo Silva and that he lived in an RV. Parker and McGee find the RV; although Silva is absent, they find Marshall Wright dead with signs that he was tortured.

Realizing Diaz is aware of Torres and Maria’s location, Parker orders McGee to warn them. Torres attempts to escape, only to be shot at and forced back into the room. Leaving Maria with a gun, Torres exits to personally deal with the situation. Engaging in a gunfight with Diaz, Torres eventually ambushes and kills him. Afterward, he finds Maria has killed Silva and reassures her the matter is over.

While packing to leave for a new location, Maria admits she understands Torres’ actions in the past, although she is reluctant to forgive him, which he accepts. Discussing her sold artwork collection, she reveals she kept a single painting of a pineapple. Torres sincerely offers to help her if needed in the future, which she believes.

Meeting with Dr. Grace again, Torres admits he feels relieved for making amends with Maria and that the experience has motivated him to confront his demons – an action he says his father never did. Acknowledging he has been drinking, Torres accepts that moving forward will not be easy but worth it.

Cut To The Chase

Reymundo Diaz escapes from a Mexican prison with the intent of hunting down Torres for jailing him six years earlier. The matter brings Torres face-to-face with Diaz’s niece Maria, who he convinced to testify against him and left afterward. The two manage to kill Diaz and his remaining associate, after which they reconcile to an extent. Having begun drinking, Torres uses the experience to bolster his resolve to go sober.
